Ask me anything   Knit Patterns    Lessons Learned

I gave myself my first needles on my Birthday in February of 2011. I decided that I was going to teach myself how to knit. I promised myself that some day I was going to be an “Amazing knitter!” So here I am, far from amazing, obsessively purchasing yarn, teaching myself how to knit, and sharing that journey with you…

    So…
I found this pattern: Sirdar Baby Vest and Pants
I fell in love with it, and I wanted to make it for my new bean before he arrived! So, naturally, I read the directions! It calls for 3 ply yarn, and size 10 needles. So in all my brilliance, I look up what 3 ply yarn means (because I am not really all that versed in yarn lingo) and I pull out my size 10(US) needles!
So, I cast on and get crackin!
As I knit, I keep thinking to myself “Gee… this doesn’t look right at all… ” After much debate inside my own mind, I decide to try smaller needles… size 9US. I cast on again, and get crackin again…
As I sit looking at both the size 10 and size 9 stitches, it occurs to me, maybe in the 1940’s when this pattern seems to have been written, size 10 meant something different than it does today…
Well, it does. It means size US 3.
Go figure.
